Nintendo has just found a way to charge the public even more for the game, so it’s no longer about value for money…
The Nintendo Switch 2 version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will not include any DLC. The Japanese company announced during the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct that several first-party games released for the original Nintendo Switch will be re-released on the new hardware. We’ve previously written about the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition titles, and what will be new compared to what we saw on the 2017 hardware.
Included in that list is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. On that note, Nintendo has confirmed to IGN that the game’s DLC will need to be purchased separately. We should add that this is an eight-year-old game, as it was one of the Switch’s launch titles back in March 2017. The expansion pass will cost around $20. So even if you have the most expensive subscription to Nintendo Switch Online, which gives you a free Switch 2 update of the game, you’ll still have to pay extra if you want to access all the content on the next-gen hardware.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild received two DLCs, The Master Trials and The Champions’ Ballad. So we won’t get those with the new console version unless we’ve already bought the Expansion Pass for Switch. At least the Japanese company was fair enough not to require everyone to buy the DLC again. It’s usually the case that re-releases (because however you look at it, that’s what this is) tend to bundle the base game and all the DLC together.
It will be interesting to see how other publishers react in the future. Maybe the Japanese company will set a new (and bad) precedent where DLCs have to be bought along with the re-release of games…
