William Roberts, who voiced Vesemir in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, has passed away at the age of 80. His legacy includes work across more than a dozen games, and his voice remains a defining presence in British audio drama and gaming.
William Roberts, the actor who brought Vesemir to life in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, has died at the age of 80. Known for his calm authority and emotional subtlety, Roberts gave voice to one of the franchise’s most beloved characters—a mentor figure whose presence guided Geralt throughout the story. Outside of gaming, Roberts had a rich and varied career in literature, radio, and audiobook narration.
A distinguished career in voice
Over five decades, Roberts became one of the most recognizable voices in British entertainment. He featured in numerous radio dramas, including productions of Batman and Judge Dredd, worked extensively with the BBC, and recorded audiobooks for the Royal National Institute of Blind People, helping bring literature to the visually impaired.
Critics and fans alike praised his ability to convey deep emotion with minimal inflection. According to PC Gamer, his voice was featured in many other video games, including Timesplitters 2, Crysis, Age of Conan, Battlefield: Bad Company, Killzone 2, Sniper Elite, Deponia, Star Wars: Battlefront, Horizon: Zero Dawn, A Way Out, The Medium, and Atomic Heart.
Though his death was first reported by The Guardian in February, wider attention followed only after CD Projekt honored his memory publicly: “This year we lost William ‘Bill’ Roberts, who portrayed Vesemir in The Witcher 3. Today we say farewell with heavy hearts. You taught us, guided us, protected us. Kaer Morhen will never be the same. Rest in peace, dear friend.”
