The editors of a prominent publication were impressed to learn that Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment’s game is migrating to the next-generation hardware of the big N.
Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition and Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition may be some of the most technically ambitious games coming to the Nintendo Switch 2, but they’re not what surprised Digital Foundry’s editors. They were surprised by Star Wars Outlaws in the video embedded below. The open-world game (which didn’t sell well) was released for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, but not the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
According to Richard Leadbetter, Digital Foundry’s technology editor, Star Wars Outlaws is a technically challenging game running on Ubisoft Massive’s new Snowdrop engine. The concept of running on this class of hardware is quite overwhelming to him. Oliver Mackenzie called the Nintendo Switch 2 port a really exciting port, or maybe an impossible port. That’s because it’s a big game that uses features like ray tracing. And there’s no previous-gen title for Elden Ring, Cyberpunk 2077, and Street Fighter 6. And that might be easier for developers to work with.
According to Digital Foundry video producer Alex Battaglia, it’s by far the most technically ambitious game to be ported to the Nintendo Switch 2. The editors believe that the Xbox Series S version of Star Wars Outlaws could give us a clue as to what to expect on the Big N’s new platform. However, Leadbetter noted how much Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora struggled when run on an Asus ROG Ally (it also runs on the Snowdrop engine).
Star Wars Outlaws has received many updates since its release, including changes to the stealth system. There is no exact release date for the Nintendo Switch 2 port of the game; all we know is that it will arrive sometime this year.
