MOVIE NEWS – We didn’t see this coming: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is trading the movie set for a mountain of legal documents as he co-writes a nonfiction crime book that could end up in theaters under the direction of Martin Scorsese. Alongside journalist Nick Bilton, Johnson is diving into decades-old transcripts and files.
News broke two months ago that Johnson had teamed up with Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Emily Blunt for a gangster film set in Hawaii. Now, it’s been revealed that Johnson isn’t just creatively involved—he’s co-authoring a book based on the real events that inspired the film.
The Rise of Hawaii’s Only Mafia Boss
“This nonfiction book will tell the mostly untold story of a vicious and defiant Hawaiian crime syndicate known as The Company that battled outside gangs and corporate raiders throughout the ’60s and ’70s. And it will shed light on Wilford ‘Nappy’ Pulawa, history’s first and only Hawaiian mob boss,” reports THR. Johnson, working alongside acclaimed investigative journalist Nick Bilton, has reviewed tens of thousands of pages of court records and previously classified federal files.
“This isn’t just a gangster story – it’s about power, identity, and what was taken from the Hawaiian people. What drew me to this project isn’t just all the action and intensity. For me, this is a story that hits home. My own family lived through parts of this era, and I’ve witnessed firsthand the legacy it left behind. Writing this book is a way to honor our Polynesian roots, preserve our culture, and share the hidden truth of what really happened in paradise.” – said Johnson via THR.
Details remain scarce for now, but it’s confirmed that Bilton is also developing a feature-length script, potentially to be directed by Scorsese himself. With the legendary director of Goodfellas on board and Johnson stepping into a creative leadership role, this could be one of the most personal and ambitious projects of his career.
