Oblivion’s Most Infamous DLC Is Back — And Bethesda’s Charging for Horse Armor Again

Nineteen years ago, The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion sparked outrage with a paid horse armor DLC. Now, Bethesda has remastered the game and brought that same controversial content back — plus even more armor, packed into a €64.99 Deluxe Edition.

Bethesda has once again stirred the gaming world by announcing The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion – Remastered, a refreshed version of the 2006 RPG classic, complete with updated visuals and slight gameplay tweaks. While the news has been met with celebration from longtime fans, it’s also resurfaced memories of a pivotal and polarizing moment in gaming history — the infamous $1.99/$2.50 horse armor DLC. That tiny purchase marked a major shift in how developers monetized content, and now, Bethesda seems ready to walk the same path again — this time offering two extra armor sets in the game’s Deluxe Edition.

According to the official announcement, the standard edition of Oblivion – Remastered costs €54.99 and comes bundled with the base game, both the Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine expansions, and yes — the original horse armor DLC that triggered so much backlash back in 2006. At the time, players slammed Bethesda for asking them to pay for what was seen as minimal, cosmetic content. Today, the concept of premium extras has become commonplace, but it all arguably started with that one bit of horse bling.

But Bethesda didn’t stop there. In the new €64.99 Deluxe Edition, players will receive not just the old armor, but two completely new horse armor sets. Alongside that, the package includes a digital art book, the game’s full soundtrack, and additional extras. Surprisingly, social media hasn’t erupted this time — in fact, many gamers are taking the situation in stride, with some even poking fun at the callback to one of gaming’s most mocked DLCs.

This Remaster Is Massive — Literally

As with any high-profile re-release, fans have started comparing the remastered Oblivion to its original version from nearly two decades ago. Beyond the graphical polish and gameplay tweaks, one thing has caught everyone’s attention: the file size. Bethesda’s latest version weighs in at a staggering 125 GB — a whopping 2,500% increase over the original game’s size. It’s clear that all the visual upgrades come at a cost, and this remaster demands serious storage space.
