Ezio from Assassin’s Creed 2 Returns—But Not in the Game You’d Expect

Ezio is coming back in a video game, but not in the Assassin’s Creed series. Ubisoft is teaming up for a surprising crossover that includes Kassandra as well. The free-to-play tactical RPG Reverse: 1999, with more than 30 million downloads, will soon welcome Ezio Auditore and the stars of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

Few would have predicted that a fictional Renaissance man from Florence would end up redefining Ubisoft’s flagship franchise. Ezio Auditore has become the face of Assassin’s Creed—an icon, a legend, and the only character in the series to headline three main games. That alone speaks volumes about his legacy. And now, years after his debut, he’s set to reappear—but in a completely different universe no one saw coming.

Ezio returns in a new game

August 2025 will mark the unexpected return of Ezio Auditore—but this time, he’s not leaping into a haystack in Italy. Instead, he’ll debut in Reverse: 1999, a massively popular free tactical RPG developed by Bluepoch Games, which has already been downloaded over 30 million times. This crossover opens up entirely new gameplay possibilities that Assassin’s Creed fans have never seen before.

Ubisoft confirmed the collaboration in an official statement: “The crossover between Reverse: 1999 and the Assassin’s Creed franchise marks the first globally synchronized release of Reverse: 1999. All servers will activate the events simultaneously, guaranteeing equal access to rewards and progression for players around the world. Each of the two phases will expand the time-travel narrative of the game.” (via Insider Gaming)

The event will roll out in two phases. The first takes us back to Renaissance-era Florence, Ezio’s birthplace and the setting of his original 2009 debut. Later, the scene shifts to Ancient Greece, where Alexios and Kassandra from Assassin’s Creed Odyssey will become playable characters. It’s a bold move by Ubisoft to keep their legendary heroes relevant and fresh, even more than a decade after their original appearances.
