Nicolas Cage Nearly Died While Filming The Surfer – “I Could Have Died,” He Says

MOVIE NEWS – “I could have died,” Nicolas Cage admits, after yet another failed attempt at surfing. But while he may struggle with waves, his new movie The Surfer is making waves of its own. It just debuted in the U.S. with glowing reviews—here’s the trailer for this intense psychological thriller.

In The Surfer, Nicolas Cage portrays a man who returns to his childhood beach in Australia, hoping to reconnect with his teenage son through a day of surfing. But things quickly spiral when a gang of aggressive locals shows up and stakes a violent claim to the coast. Cage has always excelled at playing unhinged characters pushed to their limits—but in real life, the actor ran into something he couldn’t conquer: surfing.

Sharks, Weather, and a Brush With Death

He gave it an honest try—partly because he’d long dreamed of recreating a scene from Big Wednesday—but the elements weren’t in his favor. “We had to deal with things like the weather and—no joke—shark warnings and other shit,” Cage told EW in an interview, describing the very real dangers he faced while filming off the coast of Yallingup, Australia. Still, he says this wasn’t his first go at the sport.

“I’ve tried to learn before, but every time I’ve ended up crushed. I tried at Sunset Beach. My instructor gave me a shortboard, but I told him, ‘Man, I want a longboard.’ (…) I panicked and literally got sucked into a current. They said they saw my board tumbling underwater like it was trying to escape. I could have even died.” Luckily, he didn’t—and now we get to watch the result unfold on screen.

Personally, I can’t wait to see The Surfer. The film opened in the U.S. just a few days ago and has already earned strong praise. Collider calls it “a disorienting, frenetic, cruel, and visceral experience: 99 minutes of pure terror.” The bad news? There’s still no release date confirmed for Spain.
