MOVIE NEWS – The blockbuster video game Elden Ring is officially getting the Hollywood treatment, with one of today’s most acclaimed studios acquiring the rights. Developed by FromSoftware under the direction of Hidetaka Miyazaki, the game’s sprawling dark fantasy world was crafted with input from Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin.
A source has revealed to MovieWeb that indie powerhouse A24 is developing a film adaptation of Elden Ring. While some online rumors claimed Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Men) would direct, that remains unconfirmed. The speculation originally came from a Nexus Point News post, which was deleted shortly after going live. Interestingly, A24 is already knee-deep in gaming adaptations, also working on a Death Stranding film directed by Michael Sarnoski (Pig). At this point, no official cast or crew have been attached to the Elden Ring project.
Back in 2024, in an interview with The Guardian, Hidetaka Miyazaki shared his perspective on translating Elden Ring into a different medium. He admitted that neither he nor FromSoftware has the resources or expertise to create a film themselves. However, he welcomed the idea, so long as a capable and trustworthy partner was involved. It seems A24 fits the bill. Miyazaki stated:
“I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a movie for example. But I don’t think myself, or FromSoftware, have the knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium. So that’s where a very strong partner would come into play. We’d have to build a lot of trust and agreement on whatever it is we’re trying to achieve, but there’s interest, for sure.”
Earlier this year, George R. R. Martin also hinted at the project in an interview with IGN. “Well, I can’t say too much about it, but there is some talk about making a movie out of Elden Ring,” he revealed. Martin didn’t mention the studio involved, nor whether a director or writer had signed on. It’s possible he’ll participate in some way—he remains active in HBO’s Game of Thrones spin-offs despite being openly critical of how they’re handled. That said, Martin wasn’t the sole writer on Elden Ring; his role was limited to helping shape the game’s world and lore.
Elden Ring is a fantasy action game of staggering scale. Players assume the role of the Tarnished—those who’ve been cast out by the Erdtree’s grace—and must reclaim the shattered Elden Ring. Along the way, they’ll face demigods, divine warriors, and ancient monarchs all vying for control of a ruined realm. Think of it as Game of Thrones meets The Lord of the Rings cranked up to eleven. The official game synopsis drives home the mythic weight of its world:
“In the Lands Between ruled by Queen Marika the Eternal, the Elden Ring, the source of the Erdtree, has been shattered.
Marika’s offspring, demigods all, claimed the shards of the Elden Ring known as the Great Runes, and the mad taint of their newfound strength triggered a war: The Shattering. A war that meant abandonment by the Greater Will.
And now the guidance of grace will be brought to the Tarnished who were spurned by the grace of gold and exiled from the Lands Between. Ye dead who yet live, your grace long lost, follow the path to the Lands Between beyond the foggy sea to stand before the Elden Ring.”
