Event Horizon Prequel Comic Unveiled – Enter the Nightmare Before the Ship Vanished

MOVIE NEWS – If you’re still haunted by the twisted horrors of Event Horizon, IDW’s new comic might have the answers. A prequel series will finally reveal the fate of the original crew before the ship turned into a portal to hell.

If you left the theater after watching Event Horizon full of unanswered questions—and maybe a little blood in your eyes—you’re not alone. Now, IDW Publishing is diving headfirst into the nightmare with an official prequel comic series titled Final Horizon: Dark Descent, set to explore the fate of the doomed ship’s first crew.

A critical flop that turned into a cult legend

When Event Horizon premiered in August 1997, it bombed at the box office. Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil, Mortal Kombat) and written by Philip Eisner, it mixed the sci-fi terror of Alien, the gruesome nightmare of Hellraiser, and bleak philosophical horror. But fans eventually turned it into a cult favorite through VHS tapes, DVDs, and a deep appreciation for its unapologetic darkness.

The story, set in 2047, follows the crew of the Lewis and Clark rescue ship, sent to investigate the reappearance of the Event Horizon, which vanished after activating an experimental gravity drive. Instead of a wreck, they discover a ship transformed into a gateway to pure, unimaginable horror.

Now, IDW Publishing is bringing that nightmare back with Final Horizon: Dark Descent, a five-issue series launching on August 20. The comic goes back in time to reveal what happened to Captain Kilpack and the original crew before the ship was swallowed by the void.

The series is part of the IDW Dark imprint, a new horror line made in collaboration with Paramount. It’s also adapting other terrifying titles like Smile, Sleepy Hollow, A Quiet Place, The Twilight Zone, 30 Days of Night, and Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees.

Writer Christian Ward (Batman: City of Madness) is leading the project, joined by artist Tristan Jones (Aliens: Defiance) and colorist Pip Martin (That Texas Blood). Expect a nightmare soaked in shadow, tension, and grotesque imagination.

“They’re throwing me into the deep end—and I love it”

Ward said working on the comic is “an incredible privilege”. “I’ve got some brutal and bloody surprises lined up. You’ll never see the film the same way again.” Jones added: “They’re throwing me a ton of gross and visceral stuff, and I’m all in.” With the blessing of the original film team, the series promises to stay true to its disturbing legacy.

If you’ve ever wondered what happened on the Event Horizon before it became a cursed legend, this comic might finally give you the horrifying answers.
