Clair Obscur: Expedition 33: Huge Damage Can Be Done, But Not for Long!

The developers will close this loophole in a hotfix, which is a strange statement since this is not a game that requires servers (Diablo IV).

The endgame of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is pretty insane. The game allows you to use Pictos (equipment with three slots), each of which has its own passive ability. These can be unlocked in the form of Luminas for all characters. This requires spending points on your equipment (a few hundred for sure), just like in a classic JRPG. Imagine, with a little bit of grinding, you can add dozens of passive effects to the equipment you collect throughout the game…

In this maze, players stumbled upon the character of Maelle, a teenage duelist. Very minor spoilers for Act 3 of the game follow. Maelle has an ability called Stendhal, which deals a lot of damage. She also has a stance called Virtuoso, which does 200% more damage. The most important Lumina are Cheater, which gives you a second turn, and Shortcut, which gives you a turn when your HP drops below 30%. How do we get to Virtuoso? It’s a combination of Medalum, which starts every fight in Virtuoso stance, and Last Stand, which puts you in Virtuoso stance and lowers your health to 1.

After that, let’s start in Virtuous Stance with Medalum. Use Stendhal, Cheater to get a second round, Last Stand to get back to Virtuose at 1 HP, Shortcut to get a third round, and use Stendhal again. There are a bunch of other Pictos and Luminas that we need to make Maelle’s damage unfathomable. For example, Sciel can double her damage, but there’s also a bunch of Lumina. We need Picto to do over 9999 damage by the end of Act 2, At Death’s Door gives an extra 50% on low health, Burn Affinity gives 25% against burning targets, Confident Fighter gives 30% but takes away the ability to heal (it doesn’t matter), Inverted Affinity gives 50% extra damage but healing hurts (it also doesn’t matter).

So all in all you can do 2 billion 177 million 438 thousand damage. This isn’t exactly an MMO, so for comparison’s sake, Simon, the post-game superboss, has about 45 million HP. But the kicker is that Sandfall Interactive is going to nerf this ability of Maelle’s in a hotfix on May 9th…
