MOVIE NEWS – Wry, weird, and wickedly funny, Murderbot joins Apple TV+’s sci-fi lineup with something fresher than Silo or Foundation. Alexander Skarsgård plays a security android who hacks his own system and spirals into an existential funk, unlocking a bizarre journey fueled by freedom, sarcasm, and plenty of suppressed rage.
Renaming himself Murderbot, the cynical machine links up with a team of idealistic eco-researchers roaming space. Keeping his consciousness secret, he fights off enormous alien caterpillars and murder-happy corporate drones, all while mentally binging a cheesy intergalactic soap he finds more compelling than real life.
The series stars Noma Dumezweni, David Dastmalchian, Tattiawna Jones, Sabrina Wu, Akshay Khanna, and Tamara Podemski. Adapted by Chris and Paul Weitz of Manhunt fame, it’s a show that’s thoughtful, timely, and also bonkers in the best ways.
Based on Martha Wells’ acclaimed The Murderbot Diaries, each episode runs under 30 minutes, making it ideal for binge sessions. The humor is so dry it practically flakes, and Skarsgård delivers his lines with perfect deadpan. His narration sets up each episode’s cliffhanger with cynical wit and biting commentary on human foolishness or the absurdity of his tasks.
There’s real joy in how Murderbot straddles sharp humor and thrilling sci-fi action. Visually, it meets the genre’s high bar, but fans of Star Trek and Lost in Space will find echoes of classic charm — now with Orwellian musings and a hint of Picard’s final season insanity.
What makes it deeper is that Murderbot isn’t alone: there’s Gurathin, a heavily modified human played to perfection by David Dastmalchian, who doesn’t trust him one bit. Their prickly dynamic provides some of the show’s best laughs and biggest philosophical punches, dealing with loyalty, sacrifice, teamwork, and redemption.
A Fantastic Cast Lifts This Wild, Self-Aware Sci-Fi Comedy
The cast is stellar across the board. While Murderbot acts ridiculous at times, those moments are when character insight hits hardest. Noma Dumezweni leads as Mensah, who recognizes Murderbot’s value early on despite her team’s paranoia. Her chemistry with Skarsgård adds emotional depth. Meanwhile, Arada (Tattiawna Jones) and Pin-Lee (Sabrina Wu) are a couple who casually invite Rathi (Akshay Khanna) into their bed. Wu in particular steals scenes with her pitch-perfect reactions and comic timing.
