The good news continues for Command & Conquer fans: twenty years after its launch, the iconic C&C Generals is receiving new content thanks to the Rise of the Reds mod, which is getting expanded with more options and new story campaigns.
PC gamers have long been known for their ability to breathe new life into old games, and Command & Conquer: Generals is a perfect example. Over two decades since its original release, it still enjoys a small but passionate community that keeps producing high-quality content made by fans, for fans.
One of the most popular mods for the game is Rise of the Reds, which not only enhances the visuals but also adds two completely new factions – the European Continental Alliance and the Russian Federation – alongside the three original ones. Its scale is impressive: even the old armies have been overhauled with new units, structures, and unique gameplay abilities. According to GameStar, the last major version (1.85) was released in April 2015, and now, to celebrate its tenth anniversary, the developers have confirmed a version 2.0 is in the works, with significant new features.
Generals return with new campaigns and sub-factions
This new version will bring back the general system with 15 new sub-factions – three for each army – plus two fresh campaign storylines and a new challenge mode inspired by the Zero Hour expansion. While no release date has been set yet, this news aligns perfectly with EA’s recent statement that the Command & Conquer saga is evolving into an “infinite game,” empowering players to expand it however they see fit.
And what a tribute it is to the community’s dedication. A decade without a major update might seem like an eternity, but the Rise of the Reds team has remained engaged, sharing progress and revealing new units, backstories, and mechanical changes via social media. This kind of selfless passion is what keeps games like this alive far beyond their commercial lifespan.
If you’re curious, the mod is available to download for free, though you’ll need the base game and the Zero Hour expansion to play. Also, don’t forget that Electronic Arts previously released the C&C Remastered Collection, a great way to relive or discover this legendary RTS series for the first time.
