A Divinity tease that wasn’t: Larian clears up the confusion

The latest speculation surrounding the creators of Baldur’s Gate 3 has stirred excitement among fantasy RPG fans, but Larian Studios was quick to shut it down. A simple change in their X profile suggested work on Divinity: Original Sin 3—but it turned out to be a technical fluke.

Fantasy RPG enthusiasts are currently watching every move from Larian Studios with bated breath. Following the phenomenal success of Baldur’s Gate 3, fans are eager to see what’s next from the Belgian developer. A small shift in their X (formerly Twitter) profile ignited hopes that Divinity: Original Sin 3 was secretly in development. Sadly, those hopes were premature.

The studio’s long-standing handle @larianstudios was suddenly changed to @divinity, which many took as a teaser for a return to their beloved Divinity universe. Given that Larian is working on two projects and clearly remains committed to RPGs, the idea wasn’t far-fetched. But it wasn’t accurate either.

No secret sequel, just an IP management mix-up

The buzz was quickly silenced by Michael Douse, Larian’s head of publishing, who explained: “Unfortunately (depending on your view), this is just part of managing our intellectual property—figuring out what we own, what we’ve registered, and what we haven’t.” He added, “Twitter is handing over some handles to us, and this one [@divinity] was mistakenly assigned to the Larian account. I wish there were more to it, but there’s nothing to announce just yet. We’re still working on multiple things.”

Still, fans clung to hope. One cheeky reply read: “Wait a sec… you mean a new Divinity is coming?” Douse didn’t dismiss it outright, replying, “Too early to say. But a lot’s on the table. Let’s see where that leads us.” So while there’s no confirmation, the door to Divinity: Original Sin 3 is far from closed.

Larian’s next project is already on a timeline

We await further word from Larian Studios about their future projects. What we do know is that they declined to produce DLC for Baldur’s Gate 3, calling it “boring” from a development perspective. Instead, they’re focusing on two brand-new games, and one of them already has a soft deadline: it’s expected to launch before 2030.
