The second remaster of the original Gears of War—there was already one called Gears of War: Ultimate Edition on Xbox One—may soon be playable, according to rumors.
Reports on the Gaming Leaks and Rumors subreddit suggest that an unannounced beta for the game appeared on the Steam backend a few days ago. This is visible on SteamDB as well. While this hints that an official announcement about testing Marcus Fenix’s story is coming soon, it doesn’t yet reveal when the beta for Gears of War: Reloaded will start or how long it will last. We also don’t know what content the beta might include.
Gears of War: Reloaded will certainly innovate in one key area: it’s officially ending Xbox exclusivity. This IP has been limited to Xbox consoles (and sometimes PC) until now, but the game will also be released on the PlayStation 5. It was announced in early May and is being developed by The Coalition, Sumo Interactive, and Disbelief. The remaster will naturally include all DLC and multiplayer modes.

This enhanced version will offer 4K resolution on all platforms, 60 FPS for campaign gameplay, and 120 FPS for multiplayer. It will also have HDR and VRR support, visual upgrades, and cross-platform progression and multiplayer features—meaning you can start on Xbox Series and continue on PC. You’ll need some kind of account to do this, but details on that haven’t been shared yet.
Buying Gears of War: Reloaded won’t be necessary for everyone. Those who owned Gears of War: Ultimate Edition before May 5 will get the new version as a free update. The release date is already set for August 25 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. The beta hasn’t been officially announced, but it might be revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase in June.
