AI in Gaming: Ashly Burch’s Dire Warning About the Future

“I’m worried,” says the actress who plays Aloy in the Horizon series is “horrified” by what developers might do in the future with the advancement of AI. Ashly Burch warns of the dangers of AI in video games replacing actors.

Artificial intelligence is poised to completely transform the video game industry, not only because it could mean the loss of many employees, but because it will revolutionize the development process itself. Technology is advancing by leaps and bounds, and many series like Horizon could be threatened by this phenomenon. Ashly Burch’s voice acting as Aloy has brought to life one of PlayStation’s most iconic characters.

Ashly Burch, known for her performances in Horizon Zero Dawn and Life is Strange, expressed her concern in a recent interview about the unstoppable rise of AI. The actress, who is also a member of SAG-AFTRA – the union striking for rights against AI – fears that developers may use artificial intelligence to fill minor roles. “I’m worried that some developers will try to use AI to replace actors in roles that I trained for,” she says.

AI will harm voice actors

She also said she would be “very surprised” and “horrified” if “in an open-world game all the characters were AI.” However, Burch believes the most immediate threat of AI is replacing the dialogue of secondary characters with generative AI tools, which would result in many voice actors being unable to break into the profession because there would be fewer opportunities for smaller roles (via Gamesradar).

“I really do think there’s a risk with characters in those worlds. Things that maybe take fewer sessions and aren’t as narratively important. I can imagine a world where a developer says, ‘Yeah, let’s let the AI do that…’ If you take away so many of these roles where young actors need to gain experience and hone their skills, we’re going to lose our next generation of great performers.” Months ago, Burch warned of this trend’s danger in response to a leaked Aloy character that Sony was testing with AI.
