TECH NEWS – Nvidia’s greed could result in fewer production runs of graphics cards with the Blackwell architecture.
If the current situation with graphics cards seems dire, prepare for it to worsen in the coming months. While it’s not surprising that Nvidia is focusing more on AI chips since a large part of its revenues come from the data center segment, this shift is expected to drastically affect the GeForce product line. According to a leaker at Board Channels, Nvidia is significantly reducing production of GeForce RTX 5000 GPUs in China and will focus on Blackwell MI chips instead. A production cut of around 20-30% is expected, with Nvidia’s focus shifting to AI chips. This includes the existing GB200, the China-exclusive B40, and the upcoming GB300, which will enter mass production next month.
“According to information from upstream manufacturers, most of the Nvidia RTX 5000 series products have been released. However, Nvidia’s GPU production line has been unstable, and the most obvious result after the launch of the RTX 5000 graphics cards is a supply shortage. The production lines for Nvidia’s GB20X are already at full capacity. It’s known that preparations for production of the new Nvidia GB300 began in May, and it’s expected to enter mass production by the end of 2025. Naturally, this will occupy wafer production capacity, which may affect the RTX 5000 series production lines. Reports reveal that the overall supply of Nvidia’s RTX 5000 series GPUs has suddenly tightened. Supply has decreased, and total GPU shipments for the RTX 5000 series in the Chinese market in June decreased compared to May, estimated to be by around 20%-30%. The exact reason for this is unknown,” the post says.
GeForce RTX 5000 cards are already difficult to find, and they’re nearly impossible to purchase at the recommended retail price. You’ll have to pay at least 20% more than the recommended retail price for even a base model, and in some cases, prices can be as much as one and a half times that. Several factors have contributed to the poor availability and pricing of RTX 5000 cards, and AI chips are another blow to the situation.
