MindsEye hasn’t even launched yet, but Build a Rocket Boy is already in crisis. Just a week before the game’s debut, both the head of legal and the chief financial officer walked out—throwing fans and the industry into a frenzy of doubt and speculation.
Build a Rocket Boy is scrambling to polish off MindsEye before its June 10 launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series. But the studio, founded by Leslie Benzies (ex-Rockstar boss and one of the minds behind GTA), has been rocked by a sudden double departure: two vital senior execs just quit. That’s a seriously ominous sign with the studio’s first major release looming.
Riley Graebner (general counsel) and Paul Bland (chief financial officer) abruptly resigned without offering any public explanation. Graebner posted a farewell on LinkedIn: “After three and a half years, my time at Build a Rocket Boy has come to an end. I am proud of what we have accomplished. During this time, we have doubled the company size to over 450 employees. We have launched multiple products around the world. We have designed the legal team and legal operations infrastructure from the ground up, working to systematize and automate.” Bland quietly updated his profile with no further comment.
The simultaneous loss of the legal and financial heads doesn’t inspire much hope for MindsEye—especially this close to release. On the game’s Discord, worried messages are piling up. As user Burzz puts it: “I try to keep an open mind, but it’s suspicious… People don’t just walk out right before launch if they think they’re about to drop a hit. If you were Rockstar’s CFO and GTA 6 was coming out in a week, would you quit?” Now, everyone’s wondering what will happen after June 10.
Fresh Controversy: MindsEye Director Blames GTA Fans for Review Bombing
The drama doesn’t stop there. In recent days, Mark Gerhard, director of the game, has accused GTA fans of “selling out to give negative reviews” to MindsEye. It’s no secret that Leslie Benzies and Rockstar didn’t part ways amicably, and it seems some at Build a Rocket Boy believe there’s a campaign to drag the new project’s reputation down. Whether or not those suspicions are justified will only become clear after launch.
