A cult shooter from 23 years ago suddenly looks brand new, thanks to Unreal Engine 5. A passionate fan’s remake of Medal of Honor: Allied Assault is turning heads, leaving even one of the game’s original creators completely awestruck.
Call of Duty may have taken over the WWII shooter crown these days, but ask any shooter veteran about their favorite World War II game from two decades ag,o and chances are, they’ll mention Medal of Honor. With the legendary Steven Spielberg backing its creation, the series made its PlayStation debut before Allied Assault became a PC sensation—cementing its legacy as one of the all-time greats. That’s why a new fan project, reimagining Medal of Honor with jaw-dropping next-gen visuals, has got gamers buzzing with excitement.
What if Medal of Honor: Allied Assault got a full modern makeover? YouTuber Jos van Laar answers that question with his Unreal Engine 5 recreation of the legendary “Sinking the U-529” level, offering a glimpse of how this classic would look if built from scratch today. The stunning fan demo has earned not just glowing praise from the community, but also from one of the original designers of the iconic shooter.
“This is incredible. It was one of the very first missions I created in my professional career,” recalled Nathan Silvers, one of the 26 original Medal of Honor developers. “So I’m happy and honored to have a fan remake of this quality.” Even though the detail in the lighting and textures is remarkable, you can tell it’s a solo project, especially in the slightly robotic character animations. Still, the level of artistry is undeniable.
Can Medal of Honor Make a Comeback?
The faithfulness to the original is staggering—even the placement of every soldier is spot on. “This looks exactly like how I’d picture this scene with today’s graphics. Truly phenomenal,” wrote one fan. Another added, “This is top-tier quality. It’s like I’m reliving my childhood.” Over on YouTube, someone joked, “This is how we experienced Medal of Honor as kids.”
Some were also blown away by the demo’s ambitious scope. “Honestly, I was expecting a few cutscenes thrown together lazily, but I’m seriously impressed! There’s real nostalgia—even down to the NPC placement,” commented another fan. Many who watched the remake video found themselves dreaming of a proper new entry in the beloved series. Sadly, Electronic Arts has shown little interest in reviving Medal of Honor, instead putting all its energy into Battlefield for years.
The franchise’s last outing came in late 2020, with Respawn Entertainment’s Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond shifting the focus to VR, with a mixed reception. Is there hope for a fresh Medal of Honor in the future? Every fan is holding out for one more shot.
