Mindseye isn’t just the worst-rated game of the year—players are already calling it “the Gollum of 2025.” Its Metacritic score is a disaster, and user ratings are even harsher than those from the press.
The gaming industry never forgets mediocrity, while great games can fade away. Even now, in 2025, those infamous AAA releases that fell flat are often cited as what not to do—think of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum or Babylon’s Fall. Now, it looks like another disaster has joined their ranks, released just days ago.
Mindseye – The Next “Gollum”?
If you follow gaming news, you’ve probably seen Mindseye mentioned—a “fake open world” project from Rockstar Games veteran Leslie Benzies. A key player behind GTA 5 Online, Benzies left years ago to pursue his own Roblox-inspired vision. Mindseye was supposed to be part of Everywhere, but over time, only Build.MindsEye and Play.MindsEye survived from the original pitch.
On PC, it’s a map editor and virtual adventure; on consoles, a hub for community creations. But despite the ambition, Mindseye has totally flopped on Steam due to terrible performance and severe technical issues. The studio’s public roadmap for fixes hasn’t stopped the community from already branding it as “2025’s Gollum.”
The mess is so big that PlayStation is offering refunds—despite Sony’s usual no-refunds policy if a game’s been started. It all echoes the disastrous Cyberpunk 2077 launch on last-gen consoles. Compare Metacritic scores between Gollum and Mindseye: they’re virtually the same. Maybe Build A Rocket Boy will turn things around, but so far, they only promise: “Mindseye will be a great game in the long run.”
