If you own a MIG Switch flashcart, it’s best not to use it in your Switch 2—especially if it’s connected to the internet.
A recent firmware update made the popular flashcart compatible with the next-gen Nintendo console for playing backwards-compatible titles. But using the MIG Switch with an internet-connected Switch 2 leads to an immediate ban, as confirmed by multiple reports on Twitter and Reddit.
Even running legal backups of games you own isn’t safe, as Nintendo appears capable of detecting flashcart usage regardless of what game is being played. While the affected users noted that linked Nintendo accounts have not yet been banned, it’s likely only a matter of time before harsher steps are taken—especially against repeat offenders. Given Nintendo’s often absurdly strict (and arguably unfair) policies, it wouldn’t be shocking if the company eventually bricked consoles outright with a remote kill switch.
Banned Nintendo Switch 2 consoles are still fully operational, but losing access to online services means no multiplayer, no game purchases via the Nintendo eShop (including DLC), and no way to activate Game-Key Cards—those physical releases that are mostly just packaging.
This last issue could prove most problematic. If more games ditch full physical releases—by which we mean titles playable entirely from the cartridge with no extra downloads, like the Cyberpunk 2077 Switch 2 port—then fewer games will be fully usable on Nintendo’s new platform.
