Dying Light: A New Game Every 3-4 Years!

According to the director of the Polish studio’s franchise, Dying Light will have a slightly faster pace, and a new episode is coming soon.

At the Summer Game Fest, WCCFTech interviewed Tymon Smektala, the director of the Dying Light franchise, where they discussed the Polish studio’s upcoming title, Dying Light: The Beast. Smektala not only defended the decision to release Dying Light: The Beast as a standalone game (it originally started as a Dying Light 2: Stay Human DLC), but also revealed that Techland wants to release games more frequently, shortening their average development cycle.

“I understand why some players might think, ‘Oh, it started as a small thing, and now they’re charging full price. They just want to sell it as the next game.’ But it actually is; it is the return of Kyle Crane. The campaign is comparable to previous games, and I think it’s the best Dying Light game we’ve ever made. One day, we realized we had a new game on our hands. We would like to continue to assume that as a developer moving forward. Both Dying Light 1 and 2 took seven years to make. We believe that, with a slightly different approach and a bigger focus, we can release games more often. We are probably looking at a three- or four-year cycle. Dying Light: The Beast is the first step in that direction,” said Smektala.

Dying Light 2: Stay Human was released in February 2022, so The Beast will be released only three and a half years later. More importantly, this strategy is in stark contrast to typical AAA developments, which require ever more time (and money). Nowadays, an average AAA game takes five years or more to complete—assuming nothing goes terribly wrong along the way.

This is undoubtedly a bold strategy on Techland‘s part. Just don’t let them end up like Ubisoft with Assassin’s Creed
