God of War: Has the Next Episode Been Delayed Until Next Year? [VIDEO]

MOVIE NEWS – According to a rumor, Sony Interactive Entertainment has decided on a new project within the company that will be tied to Santa Monica Studios.

The rumored Metroidvania spin-off of the God of War series, which is set in ancient Greece, may not be released this year because the game has reportedly been delayed. Jeff Grubb, a trusted insider, reported this on the latest episode of the Last of the Nintendogs podcast (embedded below).

Grubb heard that the game was delayed until 2026, so it will likely be a while before it is released. His sources have not provided any other information, so it’s not yet known when Sony will officially announce the game. The goal is to keep fans of the franchise busy until the main series continues, though it’s unclear what role Kratos‘s son Atreus will play.

Very little is known about the God of War spin-off other than that it will be a 2.5D Metroidvania game set in ancient Greece. The project’s scope is reportedly small, so don’t expect the gameplay formula introduced in 2018’s God of War and further developed in God of War: Ragnarok to appear in Metroidvania form. However, both games feature elements from the genre, such as locations that can only be accessed after acquiring certain skills.

Although God of War: Ragnarok was similar to Sony Santa Monica Studio‘s previous game, God of War (released in 2018), the DLC called Valhalla added a twist to Kratos and Atreus’s story. The roguelite mode, which worked surprisingly well in the Sony studio’s game, shook up the formula.

God of War turned 20 this year, and Sony celebrated with an exhibition rather than the remasters fans had hoped for and that had been rumored earlier this year. It’s not enough.
