Your games will soon look even better on PS5 Pro, all thanks to a PlayStation gamble on cutting-edge graphics technology that’s coming sooner than expected. Thanks to Project Amethyst—a joint venture with AMD—PS5 Pro will get a new system in 2026 that replaces the current PSSR upscaling.
PlayStation is pushing boundaries with Project Amethyst. This initiative, launched at the end of 2024 in collaboration with AMD, is aimed at bringing next-generation advances in graphics and gameplay to digital titles. While most expected the partnership’s benefits to take years, teams are already prepping a major PS5 Pro update that will give visuals an even greater boost.
Mark Cerny, architect of the PS5, PS5 Pro, and several PlayStation systems, confirmed the news to Tom’s Guide: Sony will introduce a brand-new upscaling algorithm designed as “a direct replacement for the current PSSR” (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), set to launch in 2026. The transition should be easy for developers—the new system is designed for straightforward integration—but it’s important to note this upgrade is only for PS5 Pro, since the standard PS5 doesn’t have the hardware needed for PSSR.
In fact, Cerny says AMD has already deployed this new tech on PC “as part of FSR 4”—FidelityFX Super Resolution—so PC gamers have already gotten a taste. On PS5 Pro, though, this won’t be a watered-down version: “It’s not a cut-down [version] of the algorithm, but a full version” built in partnership with AMD’s chip and hardware teams.
Perhaps most impressive, the project came together at record speed. Cerny initially thought Project Amethyst would take years to deliver an upscaling leap, but was stunned when the team delivered a breakthrough in just nine months. Even so, gamers will have to wait until next year to see this technology running on PS5 Pro.
Project Amethyst Will Outlive the PS5 Pro
Cerny makes it clear: Project Amethyst is designed for the long haul. While the new algorithm is debuting on PS5 Pro, the team’s broader goal is to push the limits of graphics for PlayStation’s future hardware as well—meaning upcoming PlayStation consoles will benefit from this AMD collaboration for years to come.
