A Single Shout Has Warhammer 40K Fans Fuming – Dawn of War Remaster’s Minor Change Sparks Outrage

A tiny change in one of the best Warhammer 40K games has fans in an uproar—even the developers were caught off guard by the backlash. The latest trailer for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War Remastered recreates the original, but with one “minor” difference that’s not so minor to veterans.

One of the Warhammer 40,000 universe’s most beloved games is back: Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, the acclaimed 2004 RTS, is getting a definitive remaster on August 14, 2025. While the announcement excited thousands of veteran gamers, a seemingly trivial, yet deeply symbolic tweak in the trailer—the voice of a Space Marine—has sparked heated debate among hardcore fans.

The remaster was announced in May, and a new teaser dropped on July 12, recreating the iconic original trailer with modern visuals, faithful to the 23-year-old content in every way except for one moment. Around the 40-second mark, the Space Marine Captain, who once screamed fiercely into battle, now gives a much more artificial command: “Space Marines, attack!”

If you never played the original, you might not even notice. But for nostalgic fans, social media and YouTubeare  filled with comments lamenting the lost classic roar. The dev team explained that the change was simply because the original audio was too distorted to fit with the remaster’s sound quality.

The Iconic Dawn of War Shout Even Surprised the Devs

However, the studio admits they didn’t realize just how much that shout meant to players. “The shout was more popular than we thought,” they told IGN, suggesting they might even tweak it before release to please the purists. Even so, Dawn of War remains one of Steam’s top-rated Warhammer 40,000 games. Its mix of base-building, resource management, and fierce battles has stood the test of time, especially after the disappointing Dawn of War 3. The new edition aims to recapture that original magic and bring it to a new generation.

Nearly every faction is available via DLC, and gameplay remains accessible even for newcomers—making Dawn of War the perfect entry point to Warhammer’s grimdark future. With the remaster, it’s possible the Space Marines will truly roar again—maybe for real this time.
