Wolfenstein Series in the Works at Amazon: Another Video Game Gets the TV Treatment

MOVIE NEWS – Great news for fans of Bethesda’s legendary video game: after the success of Fallout, Amazon is working on a Wolfenstein series. We don’t know much about this new Prime Video adaptation yet—its synopsis simply says, “The story of killing Nazis is imperishable.”

It looks like Amazon is once again tapping the world of video games: following last year’s massive success with Fallout, the company is doubling down on game adaptations. Legendary franchises like God of War and Mass Effect are already in the pipeline, though those premieres are still a ways off. But now, Wolfenstein, the iconic shooter published by Bethesda, is set to get its own live-action series.

According to Variety, the tech giant has already started developing this alternate-history video game series, in close collaboration with Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy’s Kilter Films—the team behind the Fallout series. This time, Patrick Somerville will serve as showrunner and creator. Known for Station Eleven (an acclaimed post-apocalyptic series for HBO Max, though currently unavailable there), he’s described himself as a lifelong fan of the shooter franchise.

Amazon’s Experience with Nazi-Occupied Alternate Realities

Although this project has just been announced and its synopsis only reminds us, “The story of killing Nazis is imperishable,” anyone familiar with the Wolfenstein games knows that this series takes place in a very dark alternate timeline, where Nazi Germany emerges victorious in World War II (or comes close to it), all thanks to technological breakthroughs that have changed the course of history over the franchise’s 45-year run.

If greenlit, this wouldn’t be Amazon’s first foray into Nazi-dominated parallel worlds. In Prime Video’s early days, they adapted Philip K. Dick’s The Man in the High Castle (the Blade Runner author). But expect Wolfenstein to be much more action-driven and fast-paced compared to that slower, more contemplative vision of an alternate Cold War.

Variety notes that since 1981, a total of 14 Wolfenstein games have been released—the most recent ones developed by MachineGames under Bethesda, now part of Microsoft. With hundreds of thousands of fans worldwide, the franchise offers a solid foundation for attracting viewers. Whether the story will resonate with today’s audiences remains to be seen.

By the way, MachineGames recently released Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, a first-person action adventure—where, as you’d expect, the Nazis are once again the villains. The game is available on PC, PS5, Xbox Series, and Game Pass.
