Now that the release date of the console port of 11 bit Studios’ game has been leaked, it’s worth exploring the new features coming to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.
Building on lessons learned from the original Frostpunk’s console port, the development team has refined the circular, easily navigable interface even further. The port enables players to manage the politics and populace of New London using the controller’s thumbsticks. Several improvements help tailor the control scheme for gamepads and provide quick access to vital actions. Players can use the bumper buttons to cycle through districts of the same type or access a dynamic radial menu that appears over resource piles and offers actions specific to them. Additionally, following the console release, the PC version of Frostpunk 2 will be updated to enable players to use this new UI scheme whenever a gamepad is connected.
Skybound Games will release two disc editions of Frostpunk 2. The Icebreaker Edition includes the game on disc, a New London pop-up diorama, the digital novella Warm Flesh, and a digital art book showcasing the creation of the game world. The Whiteout Edition includes all of the above, plus a multi-layered shadow box with integrated LED lighting and iconic key art; access to three DLCs; a deluxe metal and enamel keychain; two premium New London art postcards; Frostpunk-themed stickers; and one of two possible embroidered faction badges: the disciplined Technocrat or the enthusiastic Iceblood.
“Initially, we tried to carry over as many interface solutions as possible from the PC version to the console version. However, since the two games differ so much in terms of gameplay, we had to adapt and rework those systems over time. Our main focus remained on making interaction with the game feel seamless so that players never have to think about how to play while playing. Our ambition is to prove once again that complex strategy games can feel intuitive and satisfying on consoles,” said Frostpunk 2 production coordinator Igor Skibinski in a press release.
As we reported yesterday, Frostpunk 2 will be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series on September 18.
