Grand Theft Auto VI: Rockstar Prepares for Free Downloads

As Rockstar Games and Take-Two prepare for the biggest release in gaming history, they are looking to capitalize on the hype surrounding Grand Theft Auto VI.

Several free downloads have reportedly been planned for Grand Theft Auto VI, even though the game is still ten months from release. Rockstar Games will likely support the game with regular updates and downloadable content (DLC), especially for its online component. The new part of Grand Theft Auto Online, which hasn’t been widely shown yet, will likely offer tons of new free missions, cars, and collectibles for years after launch—and we may have just gotten our first taste of what’s coming.

In an interview with MeinMMO, Mike Minton, Twitch’s director of revenue, revealed that the company is working with Rockstar on the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, which he called “the biggest game of our lives.” According to Minton, the initial focus will be on the single-player campaign—which makes sense, since Rockstar introduced multiplayer components to their last two games some time after launch. He then adds that a shift toward online multiplayer will likely follow, which will become even more important for the game’s lifecycle on Twitch—because that’s where the magic happens.

The most obvious solution is Twitch Drops, which allows viewers to unlock in-game items for the streamed title. For example, watching a Grand Theft Auto V stream for 30 minutes can earn you an exclusive item for your character, and another 30 minutes could reward you with in-game currency. Minton also hinted there could be other types of activations, such as Twitch-exclusive roleplay servers that involve viewers in the streamer’s gameplay. These are some of the most popular server types in GTA Online, so it makes sense for Rockstar and Twitch to capitalize on this.

Let’s see how services like Twitch will help support the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI.
