Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection: Did Microsoft Make a Mistake with the Release Date?

Since Microsoft’s consoles are among the target platforms, we can almost certainly determine the release date from the leak they provided.

A recent listing in the Xbox app appears to reveal the release date for Mortal Kombat: Legacy Collection. The collection is expected to be released on September 29, though neither Digital Eclipse nor Atari has officially confirmed this. However, its appearance in the Microsoft ecosystem lends credibility to the leaked information. Mortal Kombat: Legacy Collection is a compilation and retrospective offering fans a deep dive into the franchise’s early years. It includes classic arcade titles, popular home console versions, and rare gems that fans have been waiting a long time to see.

The Legacy Collection celebrates the early gameplay of Mortal Kombat and explores its cultural impact. The package includes Digital Eclipse’s signature interactive documentary format with commentary from key members of the original development team, including Ed Boon, John Tobias, John Vogel, and Dan Forden. These insights are accompanied by archival footage, early concept art, vintage promotional materials, and other rare content. The emphasis is on ease of use and completeness. Players can unlock all hidden characters, modify game settings, and access developer menus with minimal effort.

Meanwhile, competitive players can participate in online matches supported by rollback netcode, which ensures responsiveness and accuracy, even over long distances. Beyond gameplay, the collection includes a comprehensive timeline of the franchise’s history told through titles from the arcade era. Detailed character biographies and backstories allow players to delve into the mythologies of Earthrealm, Outworld, and other iconic locations.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Collection is thus very likely set to arrive on September 29 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
