Surprise Announcement: The Medium Horror Game Gets a Movie Adaptation!

MOVIE NEWS – With the golden age of superhero films waning, Hollywood is greedily turning to video game adaptations: this time, the horror title The Medium is headed for the big screen, led by genre veteran Gary Dauberman, who quickly found common ground with Bloober Team’s CEO over their shared love for horror.

Just as the superhero trend seems to be drying up (aside from a few exceptions like Superman or Fantastic Four), Hollywood has started eyeing the world of video games: recognizable characters, pre-built worlds, and a loyal audience willing to give these adaptations a chance right from the start. That’s how we got shows like Arcane, The Last of Us, and Fallout, but things have escalated to the point that newly announced games often have a show or movie lined up even before release.

Some video game projects getting movie deals don’t even seem like obvious choices for major productions. Recently, it was revealed that a title from Polish studio Bloober Team will get a film adaptation—and no, it’s not their new Silent Hill project, but rather a movie based on The Medium.

For those who might not remember The Medium, it was essentially Bloober Team’s Silent Hill before Konami entrusted them with remakes of the classics. It’s a survival horror game that sees players traveling between two parallel dimensions to solve puzzles, escape enemies, and withstand an oppressive atmosphere—much like Silent Hill itself. The game even featured Akira Yamaoka on the soundtrack.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, film adaptation rights have been acquired by Coin Operated, a company founded by Gary Dauberman. If the name doesn’t sound familiar, he’s the writer and director of the two new It movies, as well as one of the creative forces behind the film adaptation of Until Dawn.

“With its compelling story and stunningly cinematic visuals, The Medium is a natural fit for a feature film […] When I spoke with Piotr Babieno, CEO of Bloober, we immediately connected over our mutual love of horror and his vision for where the genre is going. I do not doubt that whatever Bloober develops will push horror forward in unique and terrifying ways, and I’m excited to work alongside them.”

The Medium received generally lukewarm reviews at launch (though we were fans), just like the film adaptation of Until Dawn that debuted a few months ago. It remains to be seen whether this project actually moves forward—acquiring rights doesn’t always lead to a theatrical release, and it’s still unclear if Dauberman can truly surpass expectations.
