Larian Studios is still working on new features for its official mod toolkit, while the game’s infamous portrait bug simply refuses to die. Creative modders are getting more tools – but the weirdest bug is here to stay!
The eighth patch for Baldur’s Gate 3 was the last major update from Larian, but that doesn’t mean we’re done seeing hotfixes or mod surprises. During the RPG’s second anniversary community update, the studio shared a few minor fixes and admitted: it’s not done with the official mod toolkit yet. Larian says it’s working to expand the toolkit to give players even more creative freedom, with more details coming soon.
This renewed push was inspired by the game’s wildly creative modding scene, which keeps raising the bar with every new mod. There’s even a community for modding the mod tools themselves. Just two days after the official toolkit launched, someone unlocked developer mode and revealed the hidden level editor. Larian has since made more additions, but none as robust as some third-party mods.
Patch eight introduced partial level editing, letting players place their own NPCs and objects in the world—but there are limits. Larian doesn’t support the unlocked toolkit, yet we’ve seen wild community creations, unique campaigns, and even restored cut content thanks to modders. Restrictions are in place to prevent chaos and instability on the official hub, and the studio’s FAQ outlines licensing and console guidelines in detail.
One of Baldur’s Gate 3’s most persistent bugs—the portrait glitch—has once again resisted Larian’s attempts to fix it. Screenshots posted to Reddit show companions’ portraits staring blankly into the camera. Some (Lae’zel, Shadowheart) are pushed to the side or bottom of the frame, like a grandparent struggling with Facetime. The studio claimed on July 31 that it had “fixed (probably this time, really, maybe) the weird character portraits”. But two Reddit users have since shown that for them, the problem persists. What’s dead may never die—everyone loves the portrait bug!
