After a year of hype, OpenAI officially unveiled its most advanced AI model yet: ChatGPT-5. The model will be available to all ChatGPT users and developers. Altman compared the debut of the new model to the release of the first iPhone with a Retina display, an experience from which users could never go back to older models. This next-generation language model offers significant improvements in inference, accuracy, and speed, providing interactions that closely resemble working with a highly trained expert.
One of the most significant improvements to the ChatGPT-5 model is its simpler user experience. ChatGPT-5 operates as a unified system, eliminating the need to switch between multiple models. It uses an intelligent router that automatically switches to more advanced reasoning for complex commands. OpenAI offers developers three options for accessing the API: ChatGPT-5, ChatGPT-5 Mini, and ChatGPT-5 Nano. Each is optimized for different resource requirements and performance levels.
The model’s domain-specific capabilities are outstanding. According to Altman, ChatGPT-5 is the world’s best model, particularly in writing, coding, and healthcare. Users can personalize their experience by choosing response styles such as “Listener” or “Cynic,” and they can even change the color of the chat. Enhanced security features ensure that responses are measured and cautious. Rather than refusing to answer uncertain questions, ChatGPT-5 now offers so-called safe additions to ensure that the information provided does not exceed limits. This demonstrates OpenAI’s commitment to making the system more useful without compromising responsible AI.
The system retains the capabilities of ChatGPT-4o but improves upon them, offering a faster, more responsive experience. It easily understands different formats, allowing it to serve as a robust assistant for various tasks. Surprisingly, the new model is available for free. Free ChatGPT users who reach their usage limit will be switched to ChatGPT-5 Mini, a lighter version of the model. Paid users have unlimited access to ChatGPT-5.
From a broader perspective, the introduction of the ChatGPT-5 model appears to be a step toward artificial general intelligence (AGI), which Altman previously said would be available by 2027.
