MOVIE NEWS – The director of the next Resident Evil film has confirmed it won’t tell Leon’s story, focusing instead on a brand-new character within the universe. This original plot will follow Capcom’s established lore, meaning that if you want to see Leon, you’ll have to stick to the games.

The Resident Evil films carry a unique legacy. Milla Jovovich’s tenure turned the saga into pure action, while recent attempts—such as Netflix’s Resident Evil series and Sony’s 2021 film—sought to reconnect with the games’ horror roots, often with disappointing results. Against this backdrop, Zach Cregger (Weapons, Barbarian) sparked excitement among fans thanks to his passion for both the genre and video games.

Cregger has clarified that his upcoming Resident Evil movie will not adapt stories from the games or feature their characters. Speaking to Inverse, he explained that it will be an original story set within the Resident Evil universe that will “follow the rules” of the established lore. He stressed he doesn’t want to tell Leon S. Kennedy’s story because “that story already exists in the games.”

You might recall that since last year it’s been known the next Resident Evil movie will hit theaters on September 18, 2026. Cregger has stated that, while it won’t adapt game content, it will differ greatly from previous RE productions. He appears confident the film will meet expectations, especially as he admits that, while he hasn’t seen all the Resident Evil movies, he has played all the games.
