MOVIE NEWS – Bad news for Stranger Things fans. The show’s creators appear ready to leave Netflix behind and aim for the big screen. A potential Paramount deal could pull them away from the streaming giant.
Every era eventually closes, and the Duffer brothers seem to have wrapped up their time at Netflix after finishing Stranger Things. With a fifth season already looming, reports in recent hours suggest they may have struck a deal with Paramount. This collaboration could mark their long-anticipated move to cinema, with industry insiders whispering about massive figures involved.
Duffers Say Farewell to Netflix
The announcement came as a shock. Only weeks ago, Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike, had spoken about the franchise’s future, echoing the Duffers’ own ambitions to keep expanding the world they created back in 2016. Now, those plans may be indefinitely shelved as the duo weigh an enticing offer. According to The Hollywood Reporter and Variety, negotiations with Paramount to bring their production company Upside Down Pictures into the film business are already advanced. As Variety notes, “this move would reunite the Duffers with Cindy Holland, Paramount’s new head of streaming, who originally greenlit Stranger Things at Netflix.”
Neither the Duffer brothers nor Netflix have issued a statement, so nothing is official yet. Still, the deal would represent a major blow to Netflix and align with recent comments by Paramount CEO David Ellison, who stated, “one of our top priorities is to restore Paramount as the world’s number one destination for talented artists and filmmakers.”
The Duffers’ interest in film is hardly a secret. Their project Hidden was once envisioned for theaters but ended up as a home release under Warner Bros. With their reputation cemented thanks to Stranger Things’ global success, a fresh horizon of opportunities is now within reach.
While this spells trouble for Netflix, it doesn’t mean Stranger Things itself is going away. An animated prequel, Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, along with two independent collaborations with the streamer, are already on track for a 2026 release.
