This Stunning New PlayStation Plus Game Is Perfect for Assassin’s Creed and Journey Fans

PlayStation Plus is a treasure trove for gamers who enjoy exploring different genres. With such a diverse lineup, there’s always something fresh to play.

One moment you might be blasting through a first-person shooter, and the next you’re immersed in an 80-hour RPG epic. There’s simply so much to choose from. Next week, a new addition is coming to PlayStation Plus that looks tailor-made for Assassin’s Creed and Journey fans, making it a must-watch release.

The game in question is Sword of the Sea, the latest from Giant Squid, the studio behind Abzu and The Pathless. Many of its developers previously worked on Journey, so the influence is crystal clear. Billed as “an atmospheric adventure,” the game has players surfing across vast, desolate landscapes toward their ultimate destination, accompanied by breathtaking visuals.

Based on the studio’s track record and its ties to Journey, expect a largely wordless narrative where visuals and sound drive the story forward. Giant Squid describes the gameplay as inspired by surfing, skateboarding, and snowboarding. As you glide through the stunning environments, you’ll gather momentum and pull off flips, spins, and tricks using the terrain itself.

The developers call Sword of the Sea “a perfect balance of exhilarating action and fluid, meditative movement,” and everything shown so far suggests that’s accurate. The game launches on PC and PlayStation 5 on August 19, 2025, and will be included in the PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium tiers at no additional cost.

As for Xbox and Switch owners, nothing has been confirmed yet. However, Giant Squid’s previous games both launched on PlayStation before eventually making their way to Xbox and Nintendo platforms. Sword of the Sea may follow the same path and reach Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2 at a later date.
