MOVIE NEWS – Cinephiles have grown accustomed to seeing some of the world’s most acclaimed films right after their international premieres at Cinefest. This year’s festival, running from September 5 to 13, will feature Bugonia, which received a six-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival.
Bugonia, the latest collaboration between Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone, has been hailed by critics as more accessible than their previous, divisive film Poor Things. The film currently holds a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The movie is a reimagining of the South Korean cult classic Save the Green Planet!. Its two antiheroes, obsessed with conspiracy theories, become convinced that the CEO of a pharmaceutical company (played by Stone) is an alien planning humanity’s destruction.
Another highlight of Cinefest is The History of Sound, starring Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor as young musicians. First premiered at Cannes, the film has been praised for its subtle portrayal of emotions. Hungarian cinemas won’t screen it, but Cinefest will also show Ethan Coen’s new dark comedy Honey Don’t!, featuring Margaret Qualley in the lead role.
