MOVIE NEWS – We bid farewell to a true icon of the Western genre, remembered even in Red Dead Redemption 2. Canadian actor Graham Greene has died at 73. Nominated for an Academy Award for Dances with Wolves, Greene appeared in over 180 films and TV series, and even found time to work with Rockstar Games.
Yesterday, news broke of the passing of Graham Greene, a Canadian actor who earned legendary status in the Western genre through acclaimed roles such as his Oscar-nominated performance in Dances with Wolves. His career also included notable appearances in SkyShowtime’s 1883, Wind River, and the unreleased-in-Spain Longmire. Today, however, we pause to highlight his journey into the world of video games.
Although Greene’s career was primarily focused on film and television — where he left a lasting mark and opened doors for other Native American actors by taking part in more than 180 projects — the Oneida-born performer also contributed to gaming. He gave his voice to Rains Fall in Rockstar Games’ much-loved Red Dead Redemption 2, released nearly seven years ago.
Rains Fall is portrayed as a wise and peaceful leader, striving to avoid conflict with settlers and the U.S. military to protect his people. He also serves as a mentor figure to Arthur Morgan, allowing players to learn more about Indigenous culture within the expansive and dramatic open world. The character even carries Greene’s likeness, and with good reason: the actor not only voiced the role but also donned the motion capture suit for Rockstar.
Dan Houser: “He Did a Brilliant Job on RDR2”
In the months leading up to Red Dead Redemption 2’s release, producer Dan Houser praised Greene’s work: “He did a brilliant job bringing this character, the Chief, to life. The government is closing in on him. He’s losing his rights as an independent king, and he’s a kind soul in this violent world. [Greene] brought a lot of depth to the story.” And indeed he did. Greene’s contribution will be remembered for years, and we hope players take a moment to honor him in Red Dead Redemption 2 whenever they can.
Beyond games, Greene also left his mark on one of the best Stephen King adaptations, The Green Mile. He appeared in Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995) as NYPD officer Joe Lambert in a key scene, and he played Harry Clearwater, the respected tribal leader, in the Twilight saga.
