Lara Croft’s French Voice Claims Tomb Raider Remasters Used AI for Voice! [VIDEO]

Aspyr may have resorted to artificial intelligence to avoid paying Lara Croft’s French voice actress for her work…

Françoise Cadol, the French voice of Lara Croft in several Tomb Raider games, has sent an official notice to Aspyr, accusing the company of using AI to reproduce her voice in Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered without her consent. In an interview published by Le Parisien on September 10, Cadol—who also dubbed Angelina Jolie in the Tomb Raider films—explained that it was fans who first noticed the differences between Lara Croft’s voice in the original games and the remasters. Cadol called fans the “guardians of voices.” Buyers of the collection quickly realized that the voice giving gameplay instructions was not hers, sparking significant uproar in the community.

Fans argue that the issue appeared with the second patch for Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered, released on August 14, which reintroduced text from the original games. However, instead of hiring Cadol to re-record the lines, Aspyr allegedly used artificial intelligence to recreate her voice. According to Jonathan Elkaim, Cadol’s lawyer specializing in intellectual property and AI, the supposed AI-generated voice is instantly recognizable thanks to its metallic tone, choppiness, and lack of proper intonation.

Elkaim claims Cadol’s voice was used to generate the artificial copy. He accuses Aspyr of misleading consumers, while Cadol described the replication of her voice through AI as a betrayal and a sign of deep disrespect toward her fans. Elkaim further noted that the audience should have been properly informed that the recordings were not from the original actress.

Cadol and Elkaim have now sent Aspyr a formal notice demanding the withdrawal of the collection, attaching documents verifying the number of copies sold. Aspyr has been officially notified; it is now up to the company to respond quickly enough to halt sales if necessary.
