The Drag-On Dragoon franchise, as it’s known in Japan, may be stirring again as its publisher has taken an unusual step this week.
The first Drakengard launched in September 2003 in Japan and arrived in the West in May 2004. Among its creators was Yoko Taro, who would later gain wider fame through a Drakengard spin-off. The sequel came out in June 2005 in Japan and in early 2006 in the West on PS2, with Ubisoft handling localization. Drakengard 3, a prequel to the first game, released for the PS3 in December 2013 in Japan and in May 2014 internationally.
Yoko Taro’s name comes up for good reason: the series gave birth to a spin-off that grew into a franchise of its own. One of Drakengard’s five possible endings spawned NieR, which was released in April 2010 for the PS3 and Xbox 360. A modernized version, NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139…, followed in spring 2021 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
Just a few days ago, Square Enix quietly reissued the Drakengard soundtrack. Given how little the company has done with the IP over the past decade, this move raised eyebrows. On Discord, insider Dusk Golem noted his fondness for Drakengard and suggested the soundtrack’s return isn’t random. According to him, it ties into an announcement expected in September—likely at a State of Play or the Tokyo Game Show.
NieR: Automata’s massive success may have overshadowed Drakengard, but speculation now points to the possibility of a remake of the first game. Whatever the case, answers could arrive soon, with the Tokyo Game Show just around the corner.
