Although Hollow Knight: Silksong and Borderlands 4 dominate the headlines and draw most of the audience’s attention, another game has managed to carve out its own success on Valve’s platform.
The indie roguelike Shape of Dreams sold more than 100,000 copies within its first 24 hours on Steam, an impressive start for a new cooperative roguelike despite launching alongside giants like Hollow Knight: Silksong and Borderlands 4. The game attracted over 30,000 concurrent players and broke into Steam’s top 10 best-sellers list, where it currently sits at 9th place.
In response to the strong launch, developer Lizard Smoothie released a hotfix addressing early player concerns, particularly balance and progression. Eunsop Shin, the studio’s co-founder and CEO, commented in a press release: “Many fans have been with us since the demo, and we want to continue delivering an experience worthy of their passion and support. Our team has more updates, improvements, and fresh content planned for Shape of Dreams. Please look forward to our upcoming announcements!”
Shape of Dreams offers both single-player and four-player co-op, blending MOBA and roguelike mechanics. Players journey through surreal dream worlds full of deadly monsters, collecting and upgrading memories (abilities) on the way to boss battles. Eight “travelers” are available at launch, each of which must be unlocked individually. With more than 100 memories and essences to combine, players can tailor their builds to suit their style. Following the hotfix, normal difficulty strikes a better balance, offering enough challenge without being punishing—especially in co-op. The eight starting travelers are varied enough to support many playstyles.
The Shape of Dreams demo remains available on Steam, while the full game is discounted 20% until September 24, priced at €19.6 instead of €24.5.
