Soon Everyone Will See Why Wicked Became Two Movies

MOVIE NEWS – The new trailer for Wicked Part Two shows why the Broadway phenomenon couldn’t fit into a single film.

The new trailer for Wicked Part Two has flooded the internet, giving audiences a taste of why the beloved Broadway musical had to be split into two feature films. While the first movie ends roughly where the stage production does, the filmmakers wanted to expand the story, deepen the characters, and explore their motivations in greater detail.

Director Jon M. Chu previously explained on social media why a second part was necessary. “During pre-production, it became clear that we couldn’t cram everything from Wicked into a single movie without seriously damaging it,” Chu wrote. “When we tried to cut songs or trim character development, we realized only fatal compromises would be possible — ones that would ruin the experience audiences loved on stage.”

The trailer teases the complex friend-versus-foe dynamic between Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande) as they grow into their roles as the Wicked Witch and her pink-clad rival. Romantic sparks also seem to fly between Elphaba and Prince Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey), while the story promises to clarify the roles of Dorothy, the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man, and the Scarecrow — not to mention Oz himself (Jeff Goldblum).
