Square Enix’s long-rumored remake, still not officially confirmed, is reportedly facing significant development issues — and an official announcement might be much further away than fans hope.
A few years back, a massive Nvidia GeForce Now leak revealed Final Fantasy IX Remake, which remains the only leaked Square Enix project never to receive an official announcement. Based on multiple reliable insider reports, that situation doesn’t look likely to change anytime soon.
Just days ago, a Reddit user known as TomAto314 — whose credibility is supported by early mentions of Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined and the Timeless Tale record ahead of the Final Fantasy IX 25th anniversary — claimed that the project has been listed in Square Enix’s internal database for three years. Yet, no testable version has ever been built, and all internal updates only refer to delays lasting into 2024, which doesn’t inspire confidence.
Although TomAto314’s track record is solid, doubts remain. However, this aligns with statements from other respected insiders like NateDrake, who have also spoken of major development issues and even potential cancellation. All signs point to a release still being a long way off — if the project hasn’t already been shelved.
While the fate of Final Fantasy IX Remake remains uncertain, PC players can revisit the beloved RPG through the Moguri Mod. The version 9 update released in 2024 dramatically enhances visuals, improves terrain and battle backgrounds, and adds several new features. However, this is a PC-exclusive solution — not an option for console gamers. Since not everyone owns a powerful enough PC, mods like this wouldn’t even make sense on a PlayStation 5 — and Sony would likely have something to say about that.
The real question now is whether the focus on the third part of the Final Fantasy VII Remake project is the reason why Square Enix seems to be neglecting this remake altogether.
