The Walking Dead Revives a 9-Year-Old Mystery – and the “PPP” Message Might Finally Reveal a Missing Character’s Fate

MOVIE NEWS – The Walking Dead is resurrecting a mystery that has kept fans theorizing for almost a decade – and it might finally lead to answers about a long-lost character. The latest episode of the Daryl Dixon spin-off is packed with subtle references to the original series that you might have missed during the finale.

At first glance, a show like The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, set in Europe, might seem largely disconnected from the original series, which mostly took place in Georgia, USA — apart from its familiar protagonists. But the most recent episode of season three hides several callbacks that devoted fans and comic readers likely noticed right away. One of them involves a mysterious three-letter clue first introduced nine years ago. Spoiler warning: if you’re not caught up, you might want to stop reading here.

Here’s the setup: In season three, Norman Reedus’s Daryl teams up with Roberto (Hugo Arbués) as they travel along the Galician coast searching for a new rudder to repair their damaged boat and sail back to America. At one point, they stop before a statue of a pilgrim on the Camino de Santiago. The camera lingers on the base of the monument, where a bag marked “PPP” can be seen.

Why “PPP” Still Matters

Those three letters might seem insignificant — unless you remember they’re tied to one of the biggest unresolved mysteries in the Walking Dead universe: the disappearance of Heath (Corey Hawkins) back in season seven. All that was ever found were his broken glasses and a card marked “PPP.” Later, it was revealed that Jadis and the Scavengers had captured him and handed him over to the CRM (Civic Military Republic), the powerful organization that also captured Rick.

As MoviePilot reminds us, neither Heath’s fate nor the meaning of the “PPP” card has been explained since, leaving fans with an enduring mystery. The inscription resurfaced in Tales of the Walking Dead and The Ones Who Live, where the words “PPP Exception” appeared on a CRM whiteboard — confirming a link to the faction and hinting that it may refer to a specific character category, though this remains speculation.

Former showrunner Scott M. Gimple told ComicBook that the “PPP” storyline has deep mythology behind it that could eventually be explored. Whether that happens in a European-set series remains to be seen, but as Daryl Dixon’s plot grows more intense, it’s unlikely our heroes will return home soon — and that might be the perfect opportunity to finally uncover what “PPP” means and why it matters in this post-apocalyptic world.

Rick’s Brother Could Appear

There’s also a chance we’ll meet Rick Grimes’ brother. The comic The Walking Dead: The Foreigner tells the story of Jeffrey Grimes, an American who wakes up in Barcelona during the zombie outbreak. Thanks to a line from Carol, we know Jeffrey exists within the show’s official canon. This could mean he’ll eventually appear in the series — and David Zabel, the show’s creator, has already confirmed that we’ll see the outbreak’s beginnings in Barcelona, strongly hinting at Jeffrey’s arrival.
