According to the producer of what is essentially Resident Evil 9, it’s frustrating to see fans expecting things Capcom never actually promised.
At last week’s Tokyo Game Show, The Gamer interviewed Masata Kumazawa, producer of Resident Evil Requiem, who spoke candidly about Capcom’s struggles with the flood of rumors and leaks surrounding the upcoming title. Kumazawa acknowledged that fans are often disappointed with the developers because speculation and theories – which the studio never confirmed – have spread widely, and that, in turn, frustrates the development team as well.
Most of the rumors – primarily fueled by Dusk Golem, a long-time Capcom leaker – focus on the alleged appearance of Leon Kennedy in the game, something the company has never confirmed. Another hot topic is the hooded man seen in a previous Resident Evil Requiem trailer, whom fans are convinced is a returning character. Kumazawa, however, made it clear that this isn’t the case.
“Sometimes I talk to people, and they behave as if various theories and rumors are already confirmed facts, and they start conversations based on that. I’d like everyone to calm down a bit — what we’ve shown so far is everything we can share. People are frustrated with us even though we never promised anything, yet they believed the rumors and speculation.”
“Everyone is convinced that the hooded figure is a returning character and speculates about who it could be. But we don’t want the story to rely solely on surprise comebacks like that. The hooded character is entirely new — that much we can reveal. They were created specifically for this storyline. We’re not ready to share more details just yet, but hopefully this gives you an idea of how we’re approaching the game’s narrative,” said Kumazawa.
Resident Evil Requiem is set to launch on February 27, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
