Sucker Punch: The Ghost Franchise Will Stay Its Course and Continue!

Sucker Punch Productions has essentially confirmed that another game is likely in the works, given how confidently they talk about the future of the series.

The team behind Ghost of Tsushima and Ghost of Yōtei took part in a press conference as part of the marketing campaign for the latter’s release, where they discussed the future setting of the franchise. According to a report by Ungeek, Sucker Punch studio head and founder Brian Fleming revealed that the series will never move beyond Japan.

“We believe the core of Ghost is someone wielding a katana; that’s part of the essence. We can’t imagine a Ghost game set in feudal Europe. That doesn’t make sense. There are plenty of games set there, but that’s not what a Ghost game is. For us, the natural beauty of Japan is part of a Ghost game’s essence. I gave this answer on stage at the Tokyo Game Show, and I think the Japanese fans really appreciated it. That’s the way we see it. There will always be that core open-world katana adventure. We may change time periods and explore different settings, but there are some boundaries we probably won’t cross,” Fleming said.

With a katana-wielding protagonist at the center of the story, it makes perfect sense that the series is tied to the samurai era, which began in the late 12th century and ended in the late 1870s when the Meiji government abolished the samurai class. Ghost of Tsushima explored the late 13th century (set in 1274, the year of the real-life Mongol invasion), while Ghost of Yōtei takes place much later, in 1603. Of course, the studio could choose any other setting within Japan, even before 1603, as the series is more of an anthology than a continuous storyline. Moreover, both games are set far from central Japan, which is another opportunity future titles will likely explore.

Given these self-imposed limits, it’s hard to imagine the franchise ever reaching the same global scale as Final Fantasy or even The Elder Scrolls
