The Witcher’s Creator Says Henry Cavill Was Never Right – Here’s Who He Always Wanted as Geralt and Yennefer

MOVIE NEWS – Sorry, Henry Cavill, but you were never the one. Andrzej Sapkowski never had the former Superman in mind for Geralt’s role — and he knows exactly who should embody his characters. Although the The Witcher author dislikes adaptations, Kevin Costner and Eva Green remain his ideal Geralt and Yennefer.

If you’re familiar with The Witcher novels, you know the kind of characters Andrzej Sapkowski created — and how he has always tried to keep his distance from adaptations of his work. When fans learned he was involved as a consultant on Netflix’s series, many believed it would be the “definitive adaptation” of Geralt’s world. Now, after Sapkowski criticized the streaming giant for ignoring his advice, the Polish writer has revealed who he considers the perfect female cast for a series or film — and it’s worth noting Henry Cavill was never his choice.

In a recent Reddit Q&A, Sapkowski shared his thoughts on both the Netflix and CD Projekt RED adaptations, stating that the latter “misunderstood” the concept of witcher schools — something he intends to clarify in the future. What’s truly fascinating is that he gave us a glimpse into what his ideal adaptation would have looked like, with a cast that, admittedly, would now need to shed a few years and get back in shape.

According to the Polish author, a young Natalie Portman would have been a perfect choice for Ciri. While Portman has rarely shown her adventurous side beyond a few films, her acting skills would perfectly capture Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon’s bravery, determination, and empathy. As for Yennefer, Sapkowski agreed with one of the fans’ favorite picks: Eva Green.

The French actress has proven not only her talent but also her ability to shine in more action-oriented roles — and she physically shares many traits with the character. Sapkowski’s second choice for Yennefer was Madeleine Stowe, best known for starring opposite Daniel Day-Lewis in The Last of the Mohicans.

Who should play Geralt? Sapkowski has always had one name in mind

Now for the most important question: who should play Geralt? Although Henry Cavill won over fans — and Liam Hemsworth’s casting wasn’t well received — he wasn’t the first White Wolf. Michał Żebrowski portrayed the character as early as 2001. But neither was Sapkowski’s dream choice. He always envisioned Kevin Costner in the role. Among fans, however, Mads Mikkelsen is often cited as the ideal pick.

Especially now that Cavill is no longer part of the series — even though he was never the author’s choice — these statements have been warmly received by many fans. Some believe that Costner and Stowe could bring the depth and complexity the characters deserve. Others, however, urge Sapkowski to “come down from the clouds,” pointing out that of the names mentioned, only Portman is under 50 — and while it’s a dream casting, it wouldn’t work today.

It’s worth noting that Sapkowski has often criticized film adaptations of his work and repeatedly emphasized the importance of preserving the literary essence of The Witcher. Still, his imagined version would have been fascinating to see.
