TECH NEWS – Rumors are swirling about the announcement of Apple’s new technology, suggesting that something major is in development. Meta has already taken the lead in the smart glasses race, reportedly forcing Apple to shift resources and manpower from the second-generation Vision Pro to its own glasses project. Unfortunately, the first version is expected to launch without an AR display, as this feature will only be introduced in the second generation.
In his latest Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg did not specify the exact month of the product’s unveiling, but he stated that the announcement could take place in 2026, with a launch planned for 2027. This timeline aligns with the Apple Vision Pro release, giving developers time to prepare applications for the platform.
As a result, Apple’s first smart glasses will not include an AR display. Instead, the device will focus on tasks such as answering phone calls and taking photos without the need to pull out an iPhone. Gurman did not say whether the device will require tethering for additional functionality. However, Apple reportedly abandoned an earlier concept due to concerns about failure, hinting that the final product will likely be standalone.
When it comes to weight and processing power, Apple has already demonstrated impressive capabilities with the iPhone Air. The company has reportedly secured more than half of TSMC’s initial capacity for its 2-nanometer (nm) N2 process to stay ahead of competitors like Qualcomm and MediaTek. Compared to TSMC’s 3 nm N3P process, N2 promises up to 10% better performance and 20% greater efficiency. With these advancements, smart glasses powered by N2 chipsets could avoid the overheating and bulk issues associated with earlier designs.
Two years ago, such a device seemed nearly impossible, as it would have required iPhone-level performance with a fraction of the power consumption. Thanks to TSMC’s advanced lithography, Apple now appears poised to overcome these technical barriers. If the first generation falls short, the second generation will hopefully deliver on expectations.
