PlayStation Plus Extra/Premium – Quality Over Quantity in October

Sony Interactive Entertainment has revealed the lineup of games coming to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscribers as part of the October update. This month’s PlayStation Plus Game Catalog – available to mid and upper-tier subscribers – will expand by just seven titles. Yes, you read that right: seven. While the number may seem underwhelming, Sony appears to be banking on quality over quantity this time around.

So, what are the additions? As Dusk Falls (PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4), Poppy Playtime: Chapter 1 (PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4), Silent Hill 2 Remake (PlayStation 5), Until Dawn Remake (PlayStation 5), V Rising (PlayStation 5), Wizard with a Gun (PlayStation 5), and Yakuza: Like a Dragon (PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4). The PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog – available exclusively to Premium subscribers – will receive just one title: the PS1 classic Tekken 3 (PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4). All games will be available starting October 21.

That brings the total number of new additions for October to eight, which is hardly impressive. What’s more, Yakuza: Like a Dragon (essentially Yakuza 7) was already featured in the PlayStation Plus Essential lineup, making this a bit of a recycled inclusion. As for the Classics Catalog, Sony is doing exactly what many expected: during the recent State of Play, three classic games were announced, and as predicted, only one is being added per month. Based on that pattern, we can expect Soul Calibur III and Tomb Raider: Anniversary to arrive in November and December, respectively. The order doesn’t really matter – the issue is that those paying the highest subscription fees are still getting the least in return.

Once again, Sony’s lack of transparency remains a sticking point. Unlike Microsoft, which consistently communicates which titles are leaving the revamped Xbox Game Pass service, Sony continues to keep such details under wraps. It’s almost certain that more games will be leaving PlayStation Plus in October, but the company seems unwilling to share that information with its subscribers.

All in all, October’s PlayStation Plus update focuses on quality content – at least in theory – but the thin lineup and repeated titles won’t do much to satisfy long-time members. Sony may want to rethink its approach to both communication and value if it hopes to keep its top-tier subscribers happy.
