Although Sucker Punch Productions’ game is not a multiplatform title, it is already outselling Ubisoft’s title.
Ghost of Tsushima has been available for four weeks, and according to Alinea Analytics, it has already surpassed the PlayStation 5 sales of Assassin’s Creed Shadows in its first three weeks. Assassin’s Creed Shadows debuted to great success in March. It topped the game sales charts in the United States that month and sold more than 5 million copies by summer. It was also the best-selling game in Europe in August 2025.
Both games are set in the same place and have very similar plots. In both stories, the main characters seek revenge on six assassins by forcing their way through a vast, open world. The list of similarities is longer than the list of differences, so it was interesting to see which game would top the sales charts. According to Alinea Analytics, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has sold 2.4 million copies on the PlayStation 5 thus far. Meanwhile, Ghost of Yotei sold 2.5 million copies in just three weeks. The company examined some of the factors that played a role in this outcome.
For example, what percentage of sales came from PlayStation players who typically purchase first-party, or internally developed, PlayStation games? Sucker Punch had already released an excellent open-world game set in Japan five years before Ghost of Tsushima, so the game had an established fan base eager for a sequel. Assassin’s Creed fans had been waiting since 2007 for the series to come to Japan. However, it was Ghost of Tsushima that first satisfied that desire. It did so by refining the outdated methods and formulas Ubisoft used in all its open-world games.
However, since Ghost of Yotei will only be available on PlayStation 5 and eventually PC, and Assassin’s Creed Shadows is a multiplatform game that will reportedly also be released on Nintendo Switch 2, the situation will likely be different when it comes to Ghost of Yotei outselling Assassin’s Creed Shadows in the long run.
