TECH NEWS – In terms of read and write speeds, the M4 and M5 MacBook Pros represent a significant generational leap.
While the new MacBook Pro looks the same on the outside, it has received several upgrades, including a significantly faster SSD. A comparison of the M4 and M5 MacBook Pros shows a difference of up to 211% in SSD read and write speeds. A closer look reveals that both models share the same internal layout with a single fan and heat pipe, as well as two NAND flash memory chips to maximize SSD performance.
Upgraders will be glad to know that the M5 MacBook Pro surpassed the 6,000 MB/s threshold in both Blackmagic sequential read and write tests. In the read test, the M4 MacBook Pro scored 2,031 MB/s, whereas the M5 reached 6,323 MB/s (211.3% faster). In Blackmagic’s write test, the M4 achieved 3,293 MB/s, while the M5 hit 6,068 MB/s (84.31% faster).
These speeds are comparable to standalone PCIe NVMe Gen 4 SSDs used in desktops and laptops. Judging by the figures, Apple likely updated the SSD controller in the new machine, though the press hasn’t yet confirmed the exact specifications. In any case, given the large gap, this upgrade was due.
The M5 can get quite hot under heavy load—up to 99°C. Fortunately, it generally runs cooler than the M4 MacBook Pro, but if it peaks at such temperatures, you’ll probably feel it during use (no gloves required, though). The faster SSD also helps the M5 open apps more quickly and feel snappier overall.
