MOVIE NEWS: Keanu Reeves has signed on for a new science fiction feature that plays like a Tom Cruise blockbuster crossed with a shark thriller. The Matrix star will headline a Tim Miller (Deadpool) film that studios in Hollywood are reportedly racing to secure.
It feels like we could use a shark movie that actually sticks. True standouts are rare, even though fifty years ago, Steven Spielberg kicked off the modern blockbuster with one. Reeves’s next project looks set to tap that itch by telling a time loop story that puts sharks front and center.
The film, known for now as Shiver, is described as a blend of Edge of Tomorrow and The Shallows. Plot details are thin, but THR reports that it follows a ruthless smuggler in the Caribbean who is double-crossed and left amid bodies, hostile mercenaries, and hungry sharks. He becomes trapped in a lethal time loop and fights to break out. Sounds lively and tense, or am I the only one curious?
From The Director Of Deadpool
Tim Miller (Deadpool) is directing. He has the kind of heavy experience this production will likely need. The script comes from Ian Shorr (Infinite), and word is that Hollywood has been involved in a bidding contest to get the film moving. That alone suggests the premise could click with audiences. Watching Keanu Reeves square up to sharks after mowing through half the underworld in John Wick is, at the very least, enticing.
For now, that is all we have. Shark fans will have to make do with offerings like Megalodon 2: The Trench, which is hardly ideal. Even so, on the fiftieth anniversary of Jaws, it is nice to see fresh projects circling the waters. We also recently heard about a gory, wartime shark thriller called Great White Shark, though it did not fully win over audiences or critics.
